Male Fertility and Sperm Production
Get Tested! – I hope we all know that a baby is formed from the meeting of a sperm and an egg!! Therefore it makes sense that almost half of all fertility problems are caused by sperm problems or otherwise known as the Male Infertility Factor. It can be a good idea when you start trying for a baby to ask your partner to have his sperm tested for any irregularities as many can be resolved quite easily like taking a course of antibiotics or having a small procedure. This can be a touchy subject however it might help reduce the time it takes for you to get pregnant. Interestingly, low sperm count and quality can be a result of tiredness, illness or other reasons so don’t just take one test at face value, get tested again to confirm an abnormal result.
Make Some Lifestyle Changes To Increase Sperm Quality
The man in your life can also make relatively small modifications to improve his sperm health. Men make sperm on average every 74 days so it’s important for him to start making these lifestyle changes a number of months before you start trying to get pregnant.
Top Four Ways to Improve Fertility and Increase Chance of Conception
- Give up the fags! Smoking can have a negative effect on sperm count and motility. It also damages sperm DNA. Similarly avoid recreational drugs as these can also affect DNA
- Reduce Alcohol intake. Drinking excessively can reduce the amount of time it takes to conceive and increases the risk of miscarriage.
- Eat a well-balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables and support your nutrition with a good quality multivitamin that includes Vitamin C and Zinc as these are important for sperm production.
- Have lots of sex! And your partner probably won’t argue with that one. This will ensure there is a good supply of fresh, healthy sperm.
