Food is not just food.
Everything you eat is sending information to all the cells in your body. After your teeth, stomach acid and intestines are finished breaking down the food your blood carries the nutrients as messages and signals.
But what happens if all you eat is high sugar, highly processed foods? Your body doesn’t receive the tools that it needs in order to function properly. Your immune system kicks into overdrive to protect you, leading to inflammation, disease, infertility and other chronic conditions.
If the cells in your body are constantly getting information from ‘unhealthy’ foods they retaliate. your immune system concentrates on fighting these toxic substances or can even incorporate them into your makeup.
Think of the modern-day diet (pastries, buns, fast food, vegetable oils, margarine, processed meat etc) as the bad guys in a film and your body as the film. When they appear, s*** goes down- the good guys die or get hurt (our healthy cells) and the happy feel of the movie (our body) gets silenced.
Don’t think either that just because the bad guys appear in one scene that they aren’t affecting other scenes.
Take for instance a headache- most likely that can be caused by dehydration, liver or gallbladder issues and not a bang to the head. Butterflies in your stomach are caused by emotions and how you are perceiving an event. Constipation might be a result of the lack of friendly bacteria in your stomach, high stress or dehydration.
The systems in our body are in constant conversation with each other through messaging signals called hormones.When one part of the body is under-performing it has a knock- on affect everywhere else.
Fertility is often affected this way. Having a baby isn’t a life or death situation for your body, so your body puts that job to one side and concentrates on the other things like your dangerously high levels of sugar, your chronic inflammation or your perceived stressful events.
The problem with modern life is that our primal bodies are built to perceive a stressful situation as a life or death situations (think caveman running from a lion). Nowadays we’re stressed if we are stuck in traffic, late for an appointment to get our nails done or cooking for the in-laws. Our bodies react to these ‘stressful’ situations in the same way it would react to a life or death situation. If little things like these are stressing you out on daily, baby-making is the last thing on your body’s agenda.
While stress can affect fertility there are many other factors at play as well. If you have any autoimmune condition (chrohns, coeliac disease, diabetes type 1 etc) allergies (pollen, food etc), a food intolerance, excess weight, type 2 diabetes, a high sugar diet, a high processed foods diet, a high trans-fat diet, a diet low in the essential nutrients needed to have a healthy pregnancy, any or all of these things can prevent you from getting pregnant and/or maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
